ION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE FOR ALKALI INDUSTRY

The ion exchange membrane used in alkali industry is a membrane used for electrolytic production of sodium hydroxide, also known as ion selective membrane. It is a semi-permeable membrane that selectively allows the passage of a solution with ions, while preventing the passage of other ions.

Ion exchange membranes for the alkali industry are usually made of polymer materials such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). These materials have good chemical stability and corrosion resistance, and can work in high temperature and strong alkaline environments.

The main function of the ion exchange membrane is to divide the electrolyzer into anode and cathode chambers, while allowing cation and anion to pass through. In the alkali industry, the solution in the electrolytic cell is usually sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, after electrolysis, the anode chamber produces chlorine gas (Cl2), the cathode chamber produces hydrogen (H2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

The selectivity of ion exchange membrane is realized by its pore size and chemical properties. The pore size of the membrane determines the ability of different ions to pass through, and the chemical properties of the membrane can selectively adsorb or repel certain ions.

The design and manufacture of ion exchange membrane for alkali industry need to consider the durability, stability and selectivity of membrane.
